What We Believe

The fundamentals of what we teach at Hickman Heights

Christian Beliefs

We believe in one God who is three Persons – We believe that God eternally exists as the Creator, Ruler, and Sustainer of the universe (Genesis 1-2).  He is perfect in every way: all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present, perfect in love, holy, truly good and truly righteous.  There is one God, and He exists as three persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Each of these individuals are fully God, yet they are one.  How this works is a divine mystery. (Genesis 1:26, Matthew 3:16-17, Matthew 28:19, John 1:1-5, John 14:9, 2 Corinthians 13:14)

We believe that Jesus Christ makes salvation possible – We believe that Jesus Christ is God (only begotten) the Son, the second Person of the Trinity.  He is the Word of God who became flesh (fully God and fully man).  He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect and sinless life among us, died for us, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will return to this earth one day.

We believe that through Jesus' death and resurrection we can be freed from sin and death. He appeared to his disciples and to over 500 people before he ascended to sit at the right hand of God, proving that He is who He claimed to be.

Salvation is only possible through a relationship with Jesus.  We are instructed in Scripture to respond to Him through believing in Jesus Christ, repenting of sin, confessing our faith, and being baptized by immersion in water.  (John 3:16-17; Romans 3:23-24; Matthew 20:17-19; Luke 24:5-6; 1 Corinthians 15, Colossians 1:15-23).

We believe the Holy Spirit is active in our lives – The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, equal with the Father and the Son.  He is intimately involved in the world and always working to point people towards salvation.  We believe that He resides in and gives gifts to Christians, empowering them to understand and apply scripture, overcome spiritual opposition, and live for God.  (John 16:7–15, Acts 1:8, Romans 8:14-16, 1 Corinthians 6:11, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 1:13-14).

We believe the Bible as God’s written message to humanity – The Bible is God’s inspired revelation to humanity.  It tells the story of salvation: who God is, who we are, what we need, what God provides, and how we can respond.  As Christians who want to know and follow God, we recognize the Bible as authoritative and believe it is vital to study and apply to our lives. (Proverbs 30:5, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Hebrews 4:12, 2 Peter 1:20–21).

We obey Jesus’ command to be baptized – In response to Jesus’ death and resurrection, Christians are called to bury their sin and live a new life following Jesus.  In baptism, we are publicly declaring that decision.  We practice and believe in full immersion for baptism (it literally means immerse).  (Acts 2:38-39, Acts 8:12, Acts 8:36-38, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 22:16, Romans 6:3-4, 1 Peter 3:21).

We celebrate Christ’s sacrifice through communion – Along with baptism, Jesus has given us the practice of communion to remember and connect with Him.  The bread is His body broken for us, and the cup His blood shed for us.  We find extraordinary spiritual value in this God-given tradition and practice it weekly. (Matthew 26:26-30, Luke 22:17-20, John 6:51-56, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

We believe in one church – There are a lot of opinions surrounding what “church” is.  The original word simply means gathering—and that’s what we are.  We believe that the church is one large community of Christians, with Christ as the head, made up of individual gatherings around the world.  Hickman Heights Christian Church is one small part of that greater community. (Ephesians 1:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, Hebrews 10:24-25).
